If you’re overweight, you may be putting on weight because you’re not getting enough sleep.

“Not snoozing enough affects appetite and metabolism” reports that:

The amount and quality of sleep affects hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism. A study at the University of Chicago found that participants who slept only four hours a night for two nights had an 18 percent decrease in leptin and a 28 percent increase in ghrelin. Leptin is a hormone that suppresses appetite by affecting how full and satisfied we feel after eating. Ghrelin is a hormone that stimulates appetite.

One of the easiest ways to boost your metabolism is to ensure that you get more than five hours of sleep a night.

Researchers have found that when you get more than seven hours of sleep it normalizes the levels of your appetite-regulating hormones - leptin and ghrelin - and you’re less hungry.

On the other hand, when you’re awake for longer, you get hungrier, and you’re more tired. This means that you will eat more, and won’t want to exercise: this leads to an increase in weight.

So - do yourself a favor and get enough sleep. Your metabolism will thank you.
